Making Pueblo Basements Livable and Legal

Many Pueblo basements are used for storage, laundry and not much else. With a proper emergency escape opening, that same space can hold a bedroom, a quiet office or a place for family to stay. Egress windows are sized so an adult can climb out and a firefighter can climb in, and they let in far more daylight than the small windows most basements started with.

Denver Egress Window is owned by Steve Sennett, who has been doing egress work since 2004 and brings a family history in windows that goes back three generations. We do the whole job: concrete cutting, window installation, the well, grates or covers, and drainage when it is needed.

Style is up to you. A slider or casement is the familiar choice.

Local know-how

Steel-Town History and Pueblo's Older Homes

Pueblo sits where Fountain Creek meets the Arkansas River, and for most of its history the Colorado Fuel and Iron steel mill on the south side was its main industry and, for nearly a century, the largest employer in Colorado. Bessemer, near the mill, was its own town until it joined Pueblo in 1894. The city then grew from about 63,700 people in 1950 to nearly 97,800 by 1970. If your home dates from one of those earlier eras, its basement was probably built long before anyone pictured a bedroom down there.

Older foundations are exactly where good engineering matters most. Before we cut, a third-party structural engineer details how the wall around the new opening will be supported, and a certified structural engineering firm inspects the finished work.

Inside city limits, permits come from Southern Colorado Building Dept.

City or County: Who Issues Your Pueblo Permit

Building permits in Pueblo changed hands recently. The Pueblo Regional Building Department became the Southern Colorado Building Department on January 1, 2026, and it issues permits for properties inside the City of Pueblo. Pueblo County left that arrangement and now runs its own Building Division for unincorporated areas such as Pueblo West, under the 2021 International Residential Code. We confirm which office covers your address and pull the building permit for you.

Pueblo questions

Egress windows in Pueblo: FAQ

Yes. Pueblo West is unincorporated, so building permits there go through the Pueblo County Building Division rather than the Southern Colorado Building Department, which serves the City of Pueblo. You do not need to sort that out yourself. We check your address, pull the right permit and handle the engineering paperwork either way.

The total depends on the foundation wall, the window you pick, the well, how accessible the spot is and the permit requirements for your address.

Yes, Pueblo is part of our service area. A virtual estimate is an easy way to start: you show us the wall and the yard, and we talk through options.

Yes. Window well replacement is a big part of what we do. We can add a custom grate or cover to keep out snow and debris, and a sump pump or drain tap if water collects in the well.

Reviews

Straight from our customers

“Denver Egress was easy to work with. They were responsive to our calls and their prices are reasonable. We had one egress window installed and a new well. The excavation team hand dug the holes in our very, very rock ground. The installation went smoothly and looks great. When they accidentally left some construction debris in our yard, they promptly returned to dispose of it. I would definitely use them again.”

Stephen Slaughter

“Friendly service and worked with me around my work schedule and securing dogs, etc for the project. Very pleased with the window, best prices we found in Denver.”

Skotti Church

“We had a good experience with Denver Egress Window. There were a couple hiccups, and Gina communicated them quickly and helped resolve them the same day. A special shout out to Carlos and Carla who did our install - they were professional, kind, timely, informative, and they stayed late to help finish up after a hiccup during the day. I'm very happy with the with our installers.”
