Why Louisville Homeowners Add Egress Windows

Some Louisville homeowners call us because they want to turn the basement into a bedroom or a rec room. Others simply want peace of mind that everyone sleeping downstairs has a way out. Either way, the answer is an egress window: an opening large enough to climb through, with a well outside that gives you room to get up and out to the yard.

We take care of everything from the first measurement to the final inspection. That includes the concrete cutting, the window, the well, the custom grates or cover on top and the drainage below.

Local know-how

From Coal Town to Today's Louisville

Louisville was founded in 1878 and was one of the first coal mining towns in Boulder County. Its historic Old Town core grew up around that mining and railroad past, and the city has added newer neighborhoods in the decades since. That mix means basements here vary a lot, and we check each wall and lot before suggesting a window size and well style for your home.

Louisville also knows better than most how quickly a fire can spread. The Marshall Fire, which started on December 30, 2021, destroyed 550 homes in the city. Wildfire is a different risk from a house fire, but the lesson about having a clear way out still holds. A code-sized basement escape window gives anyone sleeping downstairs a second route to safety, one that does not depend on the stairs.

Working With Louisville Building Safety

Permits in Louisville go through the city’s Building Safety department. Its posted adopted codes include the 2024 International Residential Code and the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code, effective December 6, 2025, along with the 2023 National Electrical Code. We pull the building permit for your egress window and coordinate the inspections. On top of what the city asks for, every opening we cut gets a third-party structural engineering detail, an inspection by a certified structural engineering firm and an approval letter. That record stays with the house, which can be helpful when you sell or refinance.

Louisville questions

Egress windows in Louisville: FAQ

Under the 2024 International Residential Code, which Louisville adopted effective December 6, 2025, an escape window needs at least 5.7 square feet of net clear opening, 24 inches of clear height and 20 inches of clear width. The sill can be no more than 44 inches above the floor. We size the window and well to meet those numbers before we cut.

When the window sill sits below grade, the well must have at least 9 square feet of floor area and measure at least 36 inches in each direction. Wells deeper than 44 inches need a permanently attached ladder. We offer steel, stone-look, Block-Tex and timber wells, along with custom grates or covers that open from inside.

No, and that surprises many people. Our egress pricing is the same whether a window exists there today or we are cutting into solid wall, because the opening still has to be enlarged, engineered and inspected.

Yes. Once you approve the plan, jobs are typically scheduled three to six weeks out and take a day or two to install.
